Modern Family receives 17 Emmy nominations

Modern Family today received seventeen nominations for the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards. The show received the most nominations for any comedy series and broadcast television show, finishing just behind cable dramas Boardwalk Empire with 18 nominations and Mad Men with 19 nods.

Modern Family was nominated for the Outstanding Comedy Series award. The show was nominated last year and went on to win the award. Also nominated this year were Glee, Parks and Recreation, The Office, 30 Rock and The Big Bang Theory.

All of the show's adult stars received nominations in the supporting actor categories. Sofia Vergara and Julie Bowen face competition from Jane Lynch (Glee), Betty White (Hot in Cleveland), Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live) and Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category. Both Vergara and Bowen were nominated last year but lost out to Glee's Jane Lynch.

Modern Family's men dominate the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category, with four of the six nominations. Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ed O'Neill, Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet were all nominated. They go up against Two and a Half Men's Jon Cryer and Glee's Chris Colfer. This is O'Neill's first nomination for the award, while the three other stars were nominated last year. Eric Stonestreet won the award last year for his work as Cameron Tucker.

Along with the nominations for the show and its stars, Modern Family racked up a further ten awards: one for Art Direction, one for Casting, three for Directing, two for Picture Editing, another for guest star Nathan Lane, one for Sound Mixing, and finally one for Writing.

The 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will air live on Fox on September 18 at 8pm.
